As Christians we are about to embark on the journey of Lent, marked by prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, the call to reflect on poverty resonates profoundly in the hearts of believers worldwide. Rooted in the biblical principles of charity and compassion, Lent provides a poignant opportunity to confront the scourge of poverty and its multifaceted impact on individuals, families, and communities.

Fasting, a central tenet of Lent, extends beyond abstaining from food to encompass a broader ethos of self-denial and spiritual discipline. In embracing voluntary simplicity, believers cultivate empathy for the millions who endure involuntary deprivation daily. As they forego indulgences, they are reminded of the stark reality faced by those lacking life’s basic necessities. Through fasting, Lenten observers bear witness to the inherent dignity of every human being, irrespective of social or economic standing.

Almsgiving, another cornerstone of Lenten observance, underscores the imperative of sharing resources with the less fortunate. In a world plagued by inequality and injustice, acts of generosity assume profound significance, offering tangible relief to those burdened by poverty’s relentless grip. Whether through monetary contributions, volunteerism, or advocacy, the faithful are called to actively engage in the alleviation of suffering and the promotion of social justice. By extending a helping hand to the marginalized and vulnerable, they exemplify the transformative power of love and solidarity.

Yet, beyond its immediate manifestations, Lent beckons believers to confront the root causes of poverty with courage and conviction. It demands a radical reevaluation of societal structures and priorities, challenging the prevailing narrative of accumulation and excess. In a culture consumed by consumerism and materialism, Lent invites introspection and repentance, prompting individuals to reorient their lives towards a more equitable and sustainable ethos.

Moreover, Lent serves as a poignant reminder of Jesus Christ’s solidarity with the poor and marginalized. Throughout his earthly ministry, Jesus identified with the downtrodden, the outcast, and the marginalized, offering them hope, healing, and redemption. His teachings and example inspire believers to follow in his footsteps, advocating for the marginalized, and working tirelessly towards the realization of God’s kingdom on earth.

In this Lenten season, let us heed the call to solidarity and compassion, embracing the transformative power of fasting, almsgiving, and prayer in the fight against poverty. May our Lenten observance be characterized not merely by ritualistic piety but by a profound commitment to justice, mercy, and love. As we journey towards Easter, may we be renewed in spirit and purpose, empowered to be agents of change in a world yearning for redemption and reconciliation.

There are many people suffering in poverty in the UK right now, and this crisis is only set to deepen.

We want to both raise awareness of this and to raise money for those who are struggling – and we want your help!

On the week of 13th June we are asking you to live with some of the challenges faced by those in poverty, to draw attention to what life is really like. We want to encourage you to speak out about the experience, whether it’s a blog, video, photos etc. Let people know what it’s really like! Remember you are speaking up for the people who are voiceless.

Some ways to do the challenge:

Food – Live on £1 per day for food

Food – you are not able to cook any food.

Gas and electricity – If you are on a ppm or smart meter you can track your spending and limit it to £2 per day

Appliances – Make a list of all your household appliances and electrics. You are restricted to only using a few of these per day. Switch on the lights or charge your phone? Cook your dinner or use your laptop for work?

Uncertainty – Many people live on zero hours contracts and never know what next week will look like. This challenge will be a flavour of what that is like.

Wild card – Got some ideas? You can pick how you want to do the challenge!

Will taking this challenge be right for me?

We think anyone should be able to take on this challenge. Completing it succesfully is another matter. But that’s entirely the point. if you go into this challenge knowing it will be impossible for you, we want you to tell your story! Perhaps you have a food allergy like gluten? We want you to speak out about how impossible it is to live on £1 per day

How do I get sponsors?

We’ll set you up a page on our Give.net site and send you some sponsor forms. As well as some tips on how to get sponsors

Will be really be what it’s like for people in poverty?

No it won’t is the short answer! CCDC describes poverty as a ‘lack of agency’ – it’s not just being without, but being stuck in a situation with no way out. The physical and mental toll that takes on a person cannot be replicated. But we want to draw attention to their experience nonetheless.

Did you know it’s Nutrition and Hydration Week this month? This is a worthwhile campaign and most of us could benefit from advice on eating better.

Nutrition and poverty

For some, poor nutrition is a choice. Others, though, including many of those who seek help from CCDC, feel they have no choice but to skip meals and are not getting a nutritious diet – not through choice, but because of necessity. 6% of CCDC clients say that debt meant they had to sacrifice meals on a daily basis. A much higher proportion of clients – over one in three (37%) – report skipping meals on, at least, a monthly basis. In many cases, parents will ensure their children eat first, even if they themselves then have to go without.

The spiral of poor nutrition

The NHS website says that a lack of proper nutrition can lead to someone feeling tired all the time, feeling weak, getting ill more often and taking longer to recover from illness. This can make it difficult for someone in this position to go to work, or work productively, which can lead to them not being able to earn and falling further into debt, particularly if their work hours are unpredictable.

Many food banks, like those operated by Trussell Trust, do amazing work across the UK to provide food to so many who find themselves in need of urgent assistance. We at CCDC work closely with local food banks. What they do is great and we should, where we can, support this work – check out trusselltrust.org.

A balanced diet

More generally for all of us, good nutrition is so important for how we live, work, play and, hopefully, thrive. We should ensure that our diet is balanced and regularly includes at least some of the food groups necessary to give our bodies what they need.

Some of these are well known to us all, but it’s good to be reminded:

Eat enough fruit and vegetables

Try to eat foods which are high in fibre

Include dairy products or alternatives that provide protein, calcium and vitamins

Watch our sugar, salt and fat intake

Drink plenty of fluids

Help is at hand

It can be a struggle to change our habits, but there are lots of trustworthy resources to help. The NHS Eatwell Guide tells us how much of what we eat overall should come from each food group to achieve a healthy, balanced diet. This doesn’t have to be with every meal – although it is recommended that we try to get the balance over a day or week.

Take a look at nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well to find out more.

It’s good to be reminded about the importance of good nutrition for our health and wellbeing. While it can be harder to implement, there’s lots of advice and guidance available. There are also some great, healthy recipes, for example, at bbc.co.uk/food. Why not try something new this month?

We’re all aware that the cost of living in the UK has risen significantly in recent months, with prices for energy and food at the highest we’ve seen in many years. But did you know the devastating impact this is having on low income households in particular? According to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the rise in costs could see those who are already struggling financially having to pay up to £700 more per year.

On top of this, many of the protections put in place to shield those on low incomes during the pandemic have now come to an end, including the vital £20 per week Universal Credit uplift. The reality is, with bills up and income down this Christmas, thousands across the UK will struggle to feed their families and heat their homes. So what can we do? Here are four ways you can help right now.

Donate to your local food bank

We’ve all seen the news about the growing level of child poverty in the UK and sadly the number of families relying on food banks right now is higher than ever. Find out where your nearest food bank is and how you can support them. If you’re not able to give financially, donations of non-perishable groceries and toiletries will most likely be welcome. Look out for donation baskets in your local supermarket, or take your items directly to the food bank.

Check on your neighbours

Through our work at CCDC, we know that debt and poverty can be an isolating experience. Many people feel ashamed or embarrassed about their situation and are reluctant to ask for help. It’s important to check in on those in your community who may be particularly vulnerable, and encourage them to seek the support they need sooner rather than later.

Write to your MP

While we can all do our bit to help, this is a problem that needs to be prioritised by those in power. By writing to your local MP, you can draw attention to the injustices you’re seeing in your community and urge them to speak up on your behalf. If you can, why not arrange a face-to-face meeting with your MP and have a conversation about poverty concerns in your area?

Provide families with emergency food and fuel

This year, CCDC’s National Christmas appeal is raising funds to enable local churches nationally to deliver emergency support to families and individuals in desperate need. £45 could provide a single adult with an emergency food shop, £115 could feed a family of four, and £60 could help heat someone’s home with an emergency fuel top-up. Together we can make sure families won’t go cold or hungry this Christmas..

Here in Colchester, we are raising funds to give clients hampers and children gifts. You can read more here.

So What’s It All About?

We all want to fight poverty and see people released from the prison of oppression in this town.

But do you know how much work is already being done?

There is a lot happening in this town, but not all of it is widely known. There are so many people and different groups helping those who are struggling already. With so much experience and knowledge out there, it makes perfect sense to bring everyone together to pool ideas, learn from each other and help even more people.

At the Colchester Poverty Forum, Agencies and Churches in Colchester will get the opportunity to share ideas, learn from one another, collectively address the issues that we all face together, and maybe even start some group projects.

The pandemic has led to a rise in people in Colchester falling into poverty. Equally, there is increased awareness of the issues around the subject – look at the upsurge in people helping each other that we saw in the lockdowns. Now is the perfect time to create this group and work together to make a real difference in our town.

This is a new initiative for 2021. All churches and agencies in Colchester
will be invited to send representatives, but anyone is welcome to attend.

What are the Details?

Monday 11th October, 10am at Firstsite. You can register by emailing Patsi Brown at patsimorgans@capuk.org

Who Started This?

The Colcheste Poverty Forum is a joint venture by the Bishop of Colchester and Colchester CAP Debt Centre. The Bishop will be leading the discussions.

Why CAP?

CAP has a national strategy to work with the church to bring an end to poverty. Poverty is not just about being money poor, but also, relationships, mental health, physical health, anything that can reduce a person’s ‘agency’ – their capacity to interact with the world around them. CAP’s emphasis is to empower others to engage with poverty.

In August, our social media feeds will likely be filled with images of families going on adventures, jetting off on holiday, having meals out and enjoying the summer while the kids are off school. For many of us, this can be deflating, especially if money is tight. We’re not all able to afford those kinds of luxuries. However, there are plenty of ways to make this a summer to remember – without spending a fortune.

Fancy a holiday abroad?

Whether money or pandemic-related restrictions get in the way, you may not be able to get away on a holiday abroad this year. Luckily, the UK is an island surrounded by rugged coastline and beautiful beaches. Why not have a day trip to your nearest beach with a picnic to keep costs down? Often it’s enough to get away from the same four walls we see every day to provide that feeling of post-holiday refreshment.

Craving restaurant-style food?

Search ‘summer meals’ at frozenpennies.com for a whole bunch of frugal tips, alternative ways of cooking and recipes to impress the family at the dinner table.

Feeling a trip to see some animals?

Several zoos ran virtual events and set up live enclosure webcams during the lockdown, including Chester Zoo, Edinburgh Zoo and London Zoo, and many are still available to watch online. You can even catch live footage of hippos, elephants, apes and lots more at San Diego Zoo in California from the comfort of your own sofa! Search ‘virtual zoo’ to see what’s out there.

Want to watch a live sports tournament?

The Euros may be over for this year, but the kids can still host a match of their own in the backyard. Or why not take inspiration from the Olympic Games taking place in Tokyo this year (COVID permitting!) and put on your own garden sports tournament? Push a soft ball into a sock, tie the end and compete in your own hammer throw challenge, have a hula-hoop-a-thon, or try your hand at rhythmic gymnastics. Don’t forget to host a closing ceremony and hand out medals, stickers or certificates to the competitors.

How about seeing some new sights?

You don’t need to travel far for a picturesque, energising walk or hike. Check out alltrails.com to find trails near you, with something for all levels and abilities. Who knows what treats you might find right on your doorstep this summer?
